PRP works through concentrated growth factors (PDGF, TGF-β, VEGF, IGF) released from platelet alpha-granules upon activation. These factors stimulate cellular proliferation, angiogenesis, extracellular matrix production, and modulate inflammation. The concentrated platelets also release antimicrobial peptides and provide scaffold for cellular migration, creating an optimal microenvironment for tissue regeneration.
Best evidence exists for lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) with 70-80% improvement, mild-moderate knee osteoarthritis (60-70% improvement), Advanced tendinopathies (60-75% improvement), and certain Advanced wounds (40-60% accelerated healing). Response varies by condition Advancedity, patient factors, and technical aspects of preparation and delivery.
Most musculoskeletal conditions require 1-3 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Advanced wounds may need weekly applications for 4-6 weeks. Hair restoration typically involves 3-4 monthly treatments followed by maintenance every 6-12 months. We develop individualized treatment plans based on condition severity, Advancedity, and response to initial treatment.
Most patients experience 1-3 days of increased discomfort at injection site followed by gradual improvement. Return to light activities within 3-5 days, moderate activities within 7-10 days, and strenuous activities within 2-4 weeks depending on condition treated. We provide specific activity modification guidelines and rehabilitation protocols for each application.
Corticosteroids provide rapid anti-inflammatory effect (days) but may weaken tissues long-term. PRP has slower onset (weeks) but promotes true tissue regeneration with more durable results. For tendinopathies, PRP shows superior long-term outcomes (6-12 months) despite slower initial response. We select appropriate therapy based on condition characteristics and patient goals.
